Or. How to make 29.5 inch tires look huge.

I don’t know kind of lift is on here but its more than a little. I’ m still not sure where I sit with this trend.

On the one side of the coin, it’s possible that this lift and tire was just enough to get them the places they wanted to go without getting stuck. after-all, most trails are designed for people to actually use them so a little more clearance, and little more traction and AWD should be enough to get to most places.

On the other side of the coin, the vehicle needs to be as capable as the hardest part of the trail to get through, not the average . Something like this seems like a great way to get into a fight you can’t win.

The main thing is that you take a car which is a good road car with a touch of off-road capability and turn it into a far less pleasant road car with a touch of off-road capability plus a little more .

It’s hard to really get an impression due to the shadows, but that just looks...off. I’ve seen Crosstreks and even Foresters with a lift and they’re okay; the Outback doesn’t look right.

Agreed that it’s probably useless. Subaru AWD is great for soupy stuff like sand and snow; the vehicles themselves aren’t really built for rock crawling and heavily rutted or muddy trails. I think that lift is mostly for the “rugged look” just like 75% of Jeep kits.

Let’s be honest, that’s 100% for the look. If my outback can’t get up a trail in its stock  form then I should be walking.

Here, try one with the shadows bumped. It was an unusually tall outback

Or how to add 4 seconds to your 1/4 mile time with this one easy hack.

Dunno-- with our non-stop kvetching over how inappropriate all these fake CUVs are “off road”, at least this is an attempt to address the “rubber and clearance issues”... so I’m giving him a pass.  Maybe he just wanted a little more “edge” in the race for first tracks at Snowbird.

I think it’s the width-to-height thing that bugs me. The Subie arches are oval; that wheel leaves way too little of a left-to-right gap in proportion to the height of the arch. Anyway, agree it’s a bad idea.

This is where I’ m torn; I’ m not hating on it, j ust kinda staring at it wondering if it’ s brilliant or terrible. I will say one thing that I’ve learned - don’t try and push a vehicle too far into “what it aint” territory. i.e. A crossover is a good usable blend between car and SUV, but moving the slider too far one way or the other is a fruitless exercise .

oh man, you should have seen the 80 series on 100 series wheels I saw the other day. Going from a zero offset and 4.5 inch offset to a +60mm offset on a vehicle thats not exactly wide and it has fender flares. it looked...bad

I generally like inappropriate lifts, Rally 911s and such, but those wheel arches need some radius work or else leave it in the trailer park.

As the owner of an Outback that kept getting into places the Outback either couldnt or shouldnt go i faced this conundrum myself. In the end i went with an Xterra and keep my Outback for DD duties. And now that i am full time wfh i barely drive the Outback at all so i am doubly glad that i didnt spend some money on a lift and whatnot for it.

the plastic fender flare cladding is missing. surprise, the fenders arent actually wider than a legacy’s.

Toyed with this, for my 2015. Chatted with some folks on outback forums and it sounds like there is no loss of ride quality, but yes, I’m sure you lose some cornering.

I’m not fond of black wheels on a white car. This looks much better:

Kinja'd!!!

These are 29.5" tires. The lift is 2" on both ends.

I don’t have enough off- road experience to assess true off-road capability, but I can say that I would have loved this combo when I was living way out in the country. We had a dirt driveway that was a slop pit when it rained. I learned to negotiate it in a 2wd truck. The trick was to get enough speed on the gravel road so there would be enough momentum at the end of the slop to make the 90 degree uphill left turn and keep climbing to the flat spot by the house.

AWD would have made that a little less harrowing and the clearance would have helped with the ruts that developed a few years later.

I follow “safari cars” page on FB. And I get it I really do, but mostly it’s just turns a norkss a l car into a CUV. Or in the case trying to make a CUV into an SUV. For example I saw someone lifting their Ford Fiesta and putting some mild AT tires on. They just did a DYI Ford Ecosport.

On the flip side, I’d love to put like a 2” lift, 16” wheels and some T/a KO2s   on my e90. But I’ll wait till it’s like 15 years old.

For actual off-roading, I have my doubts.

BUT! It’d be the perfect car for Minneapolis . Large side walls for absorbing the horrendous potholes (I’ve replaced 3 wheels on my GTI in 2 years), and additional ground clearance for the 2 foot snow drifts that plague the unplowed streets.

I didn’t bother trying to find a way to lift my TourX. I just stuck some all terrains and called it a day. It’s seen more mud than most of the ma ll crawlers. That said, I definitely dig this outback. I didn't get one just because they're colossally slow

My parents live in a town that you can get permit to drive on the beach. they used to be very strict checking the vehicle for your stuff/capability. Its drives me nuts that some of these awds slip through. yeah you can go 90% of the spots. As you know the problem is one of these morons gets stuck, chews up the trail and needs a tow.
